extra credit reading notes: twenty-two goblins - part b

This is the second part of the Twenty-Two Goblins unit. The king eventually is victorious and the goblin lets the king have his body. But, the goblin warns the king of Patience the monk's real motives. Once the king reconvenes with the monk, he remembers what the goblin says and he cuts the monk's head off. Because of that, the king becomes the ruler of the fairies and the goblin is freed. Shiva and other gods appear and give the king a magical sword.

These are notes on two of my most favorite stories from Part B of this unit.

Picture of a sword. In Twenty-Two Goblins, the king is given a magical sword for his labor.

"The General's Wife" link to story

  • King Merchant is presented with an offer to marry a merchant's beautiful daughter named Passion. He sends his servants to check out the daughter, but because she had exceptional qualities, they thought the king would attend to Passion and neglect his kingdom. They decided not to tell the king the good qualities Passion had; she eventually marries someone else. One spring day, the king notices Passion and learns the truth. Passion's husband, loyal to the king, offers his wife to him, but the virtuous king refuses because it would be a sin. The king burns himself to death and Passion's husband buries himself alive.
  • Qualities of king: ethical, loyal, dominant
  • If the king hadn't sent his servants to examine Passion's qualities, he would've seen them for himself and most likely ended up with her.
  • Possible new stories:
    • tell it from Passion's point of view
    • Passion (name change?) is a princess who marries another king's son, but another man falls in love with her and fights for her.
"The Four Brothers" link to story
  • Four brothers decide to explore earth separately and meet back up to tell one another something they learned about science. Each brother learned something that builds on what the previous brother learned, which was basically bringing a corpse back to life, starting with the skeleton of any animal. The brother employed what they learned, but didn't realize the skeleton was of a lion until the last brother gave it life. The lion then killed the brothers and ran off.
  • I think it would be fun to create a microfiction from the point of view of the brothers. Maybe the fourth brother who gave it life since the king tells the goblin he is the most at fault out of the four.
