week 3 story: harry vs. draco
In the Scottish Highlands, there stood an enormous castle. This castle wasn’t any ordinary castle that housed kings and queens and the likes. No -- this magnificent castle was supported by magic and was known as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hogwarts was an extraordinary institution for boys and girls of all school ages to learn and practice magic. Its Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, was a wise, gentle, and understanding elderly man and loved his intelligent phoenix companion named Fawkes.
Dumbledore cared for all his pupils equally. However, there was one student that Dumbledore shared an exceptional connection with and his name is Harry Potter. He is a smart, brave, and loyal young boy. Now, Harry had a certain status about him that kind of made him known around Hogwarts and villages outside of the school. Moreover, Dumbledore had a special affinity for Harry.
For all these reasons, some students were jealous of Harry and they picked on him. One boy around the same age as Harry was in charge of this. His name is Draco Malfoy. He and his menacing friends, called Crabbe and Goyle, liked to make fun of other kids and meddled in Harry’s life. However, Harry had his closest friends he could rely on, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Of course, Draco and his friends teased them and called them names. He thought he was better than them.

Because Harry always received attention that Draco was secretly jealous of, he wanted to get Harry in trouble. Draco and his friends wanted to make Harry unhappy; they wanted him to fail, to lose his temper, to be punished. But they failed at each attempt; Harry was too good-hearted to let Draco get the best of him. Plus, Ron and Hermione always had Harry’s back, so they were always there to protect Harry in troubling (and deathly) situations.
Draco and his friends continued to torment Harry for many weeks. After more weeks of defeat, they loathed Harry more than ever. They believed Harry was Dumbledore’s favorite wizard. So, they tried to come up with the perfect plan of destroying Harry Potter.
One night, Draco devised a setup that ensured Harry would be punished. The plan was so cruel and wretched, but Draco’s jealousy blinded him. Because if his terrible plan succeeded, Harry would not only be punished indefinitely, the great Headmaster Dumbledore would be very miserable and furious.
It was an early spring morning. The sun was shining down on Hogwarts. Dumbledore’s phoenix, Fawkes, was flying around the courtyard as he does every morning. Sometimes he would perch on a little ledge and observe the students. However, Draco and his friends quietly crept up to Fawkes so they could cast a spell upon him.
“Alright, when I cast the spell you run and tell Dumbledore and I’ll sneak off,” Draco told his friends. Crabbe and Goyle fervently nodded in agreement.

Draco, a little unsure and attempting to hide his nervousness, took a deep breath. He unsteadily pointed his wand at Fawkes and yelled, “Confringo!”
At the same time, Draco launched into the area behind him. Startled by the noise, Fawkes flew off. Draco didn’t realize his wand was pointed at him and he narrowly missed himself when he cast the spell. The effects of the spell caused Draco to eject into the air, also leaving behind little fires that were once statues.
Harry and his friends ran over there as soon as they heard the commotion. “Whoa, what happened here?” Ron questioned.
Crabbe and Goyle came running with Dumbledore and another professor at Hogwarts called Snape. Dumbledore and Snape rushed towards him. “Tell us what happened,” Dumbledore requested as he and Snape looked at the kids for answers.
Draco could barely speak, but Crabbe stammered, “It--it was Harry! Harry Potter did this to him!” and pointed at Harry. “Punish him!”
Everyone looked stunned. “I didn’t do it!” Harry exclaimed.
“That’s a bloody lie!” Ron echoed.
Dumbledore and Snape were not having it. Snape stood up with a stern expression, “Tell me who did this.”
Crabbe and Goyle looked to the ground, refusing to make eye contact, and beads of sweat dripping down their foreheads. Hermione noticed this. “It was you two!” and nodded in their direction. They, of course, denied that it was them. Draco sat up on his elbows, “Potter did this to me,” he maintained.
“It wasn’t me!” Harry countered. “I’m telling the truth!”
Professor Snape just so happened to have Veritaserum on him, which is a truth serum potion. With Dumbledore’s permission, Snape used it on Draco and they all learned the truth of what really happened.
Draco and his friends all turned pale; they were the guilty ones. They were so jealous of Harry and despised him, they would’ve done anything to watch him suffer, including harming Dumbledore’s beloved companion Fawkes.
One would hope that Draco and his friends learned their lesson. They were reasonably punished. Fawkes the Phoenix lived on. Harry Potter and his friends were undefeated against Draco’s cruelty and disrespect.

Until next time…
Author's Note: In the story “Saint Kentigern and the Robin,” Kentigern is a smart and clever young boy. Saint Servan was the master of a school that Kentigern and other boys attended. Kentigern was basically Saint Servan's favorite and all the other boys hated him for that among other reasons. They teased him, made fun of him, tried to rile him up so that he might do something to get himself in trouble. I used this storyline and changed the characters to certain people from the Harry Potter series and used their characteristics. The setting was changed to Hogwarts. Fawkes the Phoenix was introduced in place of Saint Servan's Robin, but instead of killing the bird, I changed the plot to Draco's plan backfiring once again and injuring himself. In the story, Kentigern, with his unique powers, said a prayer to bring the Robin back to life. This is how Saint Servan learned the truth of what happened to his Robin.

Soriyana,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job building the scenery around your story. I love that Fawkes finally gets a story that gives him some attention. I'll definitely check out Saint Kentigern for one of my extra credit readings. I'm looking forward to reading more of your work!

Hey Soriyana!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed how descriptive you were when you were describing the castle and the various characters. Doing that allowed me to get a vivid mental picture of what the setting would look like. I also liked how you described the kids who picked on Harry. Just from your descriptions, I didn’t like them from the start! You did a great job.
I really enjoyed this story. I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan and have read the series over 5 fold, (the fourth book 8 times). I always wondered what would go on in non-plot related scenarios, I think this is a good example of it. I enjoyed the accuracy of the characters and how they compared to the characters in Saint Kentigern. Your author's note really helped clarify things. I wonder what would happen if you had killed off Fawkes, if so how would he come back like the robin in Saint Kerigern? Lets pretend this did happen, would Fawkes just rise from the ashes again as it is a Phoenix or would something more drastic need to happen? One suggestion I have is to possible keep writing stories from this perspective, it is refreshing to see stories in a format that uses more popular pop culture. Overall Wonderful Job.
