week 9 reading notes: african tales from congo - part b

"How the Fetish Sunga Punished My Great-Uncle's Twin Brother, Basa" link to story

  • Basa is a fisherman who lies about how many fish he collects so that no one would know how much fish he actually has. A fetish named Sunga knows he is lying and concocts a plan to lure Basa to a feast she sets up. Sunga gets Basa drunk so that she could make sure he doesn't speak and lie anymore. Now, Basa can only talk using signs, or with his hands.
  • Basa: clever, smart, maybe naive
  • Sunga: magical, fair, persuasive
  • Retell the story from Sunga's perspective
  • What would happen if Basa didn't eat the food/drink the wine?
"The Rabbit and the Antelope" link to story
  • A rabbit and an antelope plan on building a well together so that they would never be thirsty during the dry and hot season. Ultimately, the rabbit makes up lies so that the antelope ends up doing all the work and the rabbit eats all the food they stashed for the season. The antelope promises he won't harm the rabbit as long as the rabbit leaves forever, but he eventually finds out that the rabbit had also been drinking from the well, which enrages the antelope. The antelope creates a trap for the rabbit and kills him in the end.
  • Rabbit: conniving and selfish
  • Antelope: hardworking, compassionate (to a point)
  • Create a story with a modern setting and relatable plot
    • Have human characters in place of the animals

"The Leopard and the Crocodile" link to story
  • A man with many lazy wives sought help from a leopard and a crocodile to bring him and his people food to feast on. He makes a promise to both that he will provide palm-nuts to each animal only in return for food. The leopard and crocodile get tired of palm-nuts and ask the man to give them a dog to eat. The man doesn't want to, so he tells them there is a spot that they could find a dog. The leopard and crocodile have not met each other and don't know the scheme the man set up, so they both assume each other is a dog. The man and the rest of the town watch as the animals attack one another to their death and then feast on the food the leopard and crocodile brought to the man.
  • Maybe retell a story where the crocodile and leopard figure out the man's scheme. They work together to get revenge on the man.
  • Or it could be a modern story: the man has two girlfriends that don't know about each other.
