week 12 reading notes: english fairy tales - part b
"Mr. Fox" - link to story
- Lady Mary is a woman who has many brothers and many lovers. She decides that she is going to marry one of her lovers, Mr. Fox. One day, while he is away for business, she goes to his castle -- not having been there before, but Mr. Fox's description of his castle was enough for her to identify it. As she goes into the castle, there are several warnings telling her to "be bold," but she continues on. Then, she goes into a gallery where she finds the bodies and skeletons of young and beautiful ladies. Horrified, Lady Mary runs out, but sees Mr. Fox dragging a body of another girl. Lady Mary is able to hide, but she witnesses Mr. Fox chop off the girl's hand with a diamond ring on it, which lands into Lady Mary's lap, unbeknownst to Mr. Fox. Lady Mary sneaks away and quickly runs home. The next morning, Mr. Fox notices his wife-to-be looks pale. She tells him she had a dream, but the dream she describes is exactly what happened the night before. Mr. Fox repeatedly denies that it did not happen, but then Lady Mary pulls out the girl's hand to show him. Then, her brothers and friends chop him into pieces.
- This would be fun to recreate a more modernized story.
- The castle could be a regular house instead
- Mr. Fox is a mysterious man

"Mr. Miacca" - link to story
- Mr. Miacca is a man who like a punisher-type. He's almost like "boogeyman" in that the bad kids don't really believe him/in him, but he's there to discipline the bad kids/teach them a lesson. One day, a little boy named Tommy Grimes doesn't listen to his mother's warning that Mr. Miacca will take him and he runs out into the streets. As he gets ready to turn a corner, Mr. Miacca grabs Tommy and brings him to his house, telling Tommy he's supper. Tommy is able to trick Mr. Miacca and his wife at their house and he runs back to his house. Some time later, on another day, Tommy runs out to the street and again is scooped up by Mr. Miacca. Mr. Miacca warns Tommy he will personally supervise him. However, Tommy is able to escape again, but he never ran out into the streets until he was an older boy.
- Mr. Miacca doesn't really harm kids; he teaches the bad kids a lesson by trying to scare them so they don't misbehave.
