week 13 reading notes: canterbury tales - part a

"The Franklin's Tale: The Promise of Dorigen" - link to story(s)

  • This is a four-part story of the Canterbury Tales unit.
  • The story begins with a knight named Arviragus who ends up marrying a noble lady named Dorigen. They live in happiness for some years until Arviragus has to go away to England for a couple of years. Of course, Dorigen is sad and mournful in his absence; her friends try to comfort her and cheer her up until her loving husband returns home. One day, Dorigen's friends take her to a beautiful garden in another attempt of making her forget her sadness for a little bit. Dorigen still isn't in a mood to be singing and dancing with her friends, so she stays by herself, but she notices a young, handsome man gazing at her. His name is Aurelius and he has loved Dorigen for two years, so he professes his love to her. Dorigen reminds him that she loves her husband, but if Aurelius could make her worries disappear, she would belong to Aurelius. Dorigen tells him about the black rocks by the sea and how she worries they'll harm Arviragus' safety on the ships. Time had passed and Aurelius wasn't able to fulfill Dorigen's wish, but Arviragus had finally returned home safely. Aurelius felt heartbroken, so his brother decided to take them to go see a magician for help. The magician acknowledges that removing all those rocks is a laborious task and he asks for 1,000 pounds in return. With no hesitation, Aurelius makes the agreement. So, the magician fulfills his end of the agreement and Aurelius goes to Dorigen to tell her the news. She is visibly upset and confesses her pact with Aurelius to her husband. Even though he couldn't bear to lose her, he let her go. She meets up with Aurelius and he sees how sad she is; he pities her and admired her husband's noble and unselfish behavior, so he tells Dorigen to go back to Arviragus. Aurelius still had to obey his end of the agreement with the magician, but he hopes the magician can cut him some slack since Aurelius doesn't have the full 1,000 pounds ready. When Aurelius visits the magician with just 500 pounds, the magician inquires and Aurelius tells him the whole story. The magician also recognizes how noble Aurelius was for letting his love go, so he freed him from his 1,000 payment.
  • It would be fun to recreate a modern story.
  • Maybe it doesn't have to be about love and marriage?

"The Pardoner's Tale: The Revelers" link to story(s)
  • This is a three-part story.
  • The story involves three young men who are so wild and terrible. While drinking in a tavern one night, they hear the stories involving someone, named Death, who has killed many. The men made a pact and swore they would find and kill this Death. They came upon an old man who knows a lot about Death, so the men believe he is Death's spy and threatens the man to tell them where Death is. The old man says he last saw Death underneath an oak tree in the woods and so the men head that way. When they get there, they find a pile of gold instead that they decide to keep for themselves. However, they needed a plan so that no other would know about it. One of the men was sent to town to gather food and wine while the other two stayed to guard the gold. The two men and the individual man who went to town each came up with a plan in order to maximize their portion of the gold. The two men planned a scheme to stab the single man, but the single man had poisoned the wine with rat poison. In the end, they all died trying to find Death.
